Manufacturing: Putting the Research to Work

Every day around the world, women pamper their skin with the most advanced skin care technology from Mary Kay. They plump their lashes with the latest mascara formulations and apply the most fashionable lipstick colors created to coordinate with global fashion trends. Mary Kay manufacturing and quality assurance departments ensure that consumers everywhere have a consistent, quality experience each time they use Mary Kay® products. While the product line varies throughout our more than 30 worldwide markets, the Company’s commitment to quality never waivers.

Meeting Consumer Needs Worldwide
To meet the needs of the Mary Kay independent sales force wherever they are in the world, Mary Kay Inc. has two state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities: one near our Company headquarters in Dallas, Texas, and the other in Hangzhou, China.

U.S. Manufacturing
The U.S. plant is a 420,000-square-foot facility that processes some of the world’s most popular skin care and color cosmetics products. Having been recognized as an FDA-registered drug manufacturing plant, Mary Kay Inc. is able to produce and distribute products classified as over-the-counter drugs, such as sunscreen. During a typical 10-hour shift, the Dallas manufacturing facility can produce:

35,000 trays of MK Signature® Cheek Colour.

46,000 trays of MK Signature® Eye Colour.

25,000 tubes of MK Signature® Creme Lipstick.

50,000 bottles of Private Spa Collection® Body Wash.

50,000 bottles of Private Spa Collection® Moisture Lotion.

66,000 tubes of Mary Kay® Foundation.

18,500 bottles of TimeWise® Day Solution Sunscreen SPF 22.

18,500 bottles of TimeWise® Night Solution.

International Manufacturing
In 1995, a second manufacturing plant opened in Hangzhou, China, to manufacture and distribute products to our independent sales force members in China. More recently, a new, 195,000-square-foot facility opened in March 2006 to accommodate the growing business in the Asia-Pacific region. International Manufacturing works closely with Mary Kay international markets to ensure that the Company complies with packaging and registration requirements that vary from market to market.

In China, Mary Kay Inc.’s manufacturing plant has been designated an ISO 9001 facility, a prestigious recognition of the Company’s commitment to meet the highest quality standards in the world.

A Quest for Quality
Once the most desirable form of a product is created and tested, the formula is produced on a large scale and packaged for shipment. Mary Kay Inc. relies on a team of highly trained scientists, chemists, technicians, quality engineers and inspectors to ensure that quality and safety standards are met or exceeded to ensure consumer satisfaction. Incoming packaging components are inspected before use, product samples are continually checked for microbiological purity, and staff and computerised systems continuously monitor production lines at the manufacturing plants.

To give you an example of the Mary Kay superior standards of quality, the quality assurance team performs on average each year:

More than 1,000 stability studies on products.

More than 100,000 analytical measurements of products and 250,000 measurements of packaging components.

More than 300,000 tests on ingredients and finished goods.
